Glut*nous

([personal profile] dougo Oct. 31st, 2006 12:41 am)
Random late-night discovery: glutinous and glutenous are both words. The former means "like glue", the latter means "full of gluten". I'm guessing this means someone who is allergic to gluten would have no problem with glutinous rice. (Or glutinous rice chicken.)

I know someone with Coeliac's Disease (pronounced "silly-ack" and spelled at least close to how I spelled it) and rice is his major starch for survival, even glutinous rice. He isn't dead, so I figure that whatever connection there is between the words "glutinous" and "glutenous" isn't the obvious one.

celiac disease = inability to tolerate wheat products, including wheat gluten. Yes, no relation to glutinousness (glutinosity?) of non-gluten-containing grains such as rice.

I discovered this one about six years ago when I first turned vegan. I started reading ingredients and had to actually figure out what words like "whey" and "gluten" meant.
