Some friends of mine were on the news on Monday night, in a Special Report about polyamory in Massachusetts. The WHDH website has a transcript and video. The promos for the report were somewhat sensational—they're not just in Utah, but here in our own state!—but the report itself was reasonably neutral, if a bit too short to really explore the issues.

Newsmaker are sensationalistic without giving the whole story! Film at 11!

Interesting. I take it that's the family unit I'm also familiar with?

I want my brain cells back from HBO. That's the price I pay for seeing two episodes of Big Love. Never again.

But HBO is sneaky. They make you think "Huh, I'm watching intelligent television for a change." Kind of like Dream On and Sex in the City. They are well produced and well written and the actors are good. But basically it's just all about the sex. The kind of reason males aged 22-35 buy HBO in the first place.

Sex is actually a very small part of the show. The last couple episodes haven't even referred to sex, let alone show it.

Not a single skimpy outfit? In the first episode (maybe it was the second?) a good part of the drama was about how short the youngest wife's nightie was. When they say "sex sells" they don't mean intercourse. It includes the erotic and otherwise arousing.

At least the report was mostly neutral. I've been a proponent of legalizing polygamy for awhile now (although I've never been in a polyamorous relationship myself) because I think it is very hard sometimes for two people to meet all of each others needs (and no, I don't mean just physically) not to mention how expensive it is to raise families these days. Financially speaking and from a resource perspective it makes sense to have three parents rather than two.

However, I think the subject needs a lot more exposure and non-judgmental reflection before the public would go past the knee-jerk "polygamy is evil" reaction that most people have. Kudos to your friends to be willing to weather the stigma to do what is right for them.
