Yeah, so I've heard (haven't seen it). He also played R. Crumb in American Splendor, and was credited in Sweet and Lowdown but I never saw him (and I was watching for him, too).
he plays guitar with sean penn at one point. no lines, just...pops up onstage for no apparent reason. and for that he got below-the-title billing on the poster.
if you read jackson's LJ (and some comments doc hammer left on deviant art), you'd know that the fate of the VB hung in the balance much more than you might think. it was cruel.
