I need a Tivo for radio

Last night after lying in bed for an hour and a half not being able to fall asleep, I turned on the radio. It was 3am, just in time for a program on WERS called "Psychedelic Mischief". The playlist was all '60s and early '70s psychedelia, some underground (but well-known today in the right circles) stuff like Gandalf, KaK, The Third Bardo, and some mainstream stuff like Jethro Tull, Blind Faith, Cream. I turned it off after an hour because otherwise I'd have been up all night. How come these programs are never on when I'm in the car scanning the dial for good music?

Because it is not mainstream profitable music... But you knew that!

Well, the stuff on WERS (and WZBC, WMBR, WMFO, etc) when I am in my car is certainly not mainstream profitable music either. But it's usually not the kind of non-mainstream unprofitable music I enjoy, for some reason.

Well, even for those stations, it does not have mass appeal. It is put on late night for a reason.

I think the reason is more about DJ seniority than popularity of the music. WMBR's "Lost & Found" show is on weekdays from noon to 2 with a fairly similar format (when it's not fixated on Motown, which seems to be all the times I tune in).
