Well, Craig Kilborn only has three shows left as host of "The Late Late Show". Carl Reiner is on tonight, which means they'll probably do the final "Sebastian: The Asexual Icon" bit (Carl played his estranged father a few months ago). Tomorrow night has John Cleese and Morrissey, while the final show's line-up is still secret.

I'm really sad to see him go. He brought a great Swingers-esque energy to late night, a blend of hip, hip wannabe, and self-mocking faux-hip. He had an upbeat charm, good rapport with the guests, but also a deep reservoir of Letterman-esque snarkiness and cynicism born in ESPN's "Sports Center" and honed in the first three years of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show". And last Monday, after five years at the 12:37am slot on CBS, he announced out of the blue that he'd be leaving in two weeks.

The rumors are that he and the network were far apart on salary negotiations, which is plausible (ratings have always been somewhat tepid), but his public explanation was that he just wanted time to travel, work on other projects, and just relax (and drink scotch in the afternoons). It seems to be a time of endings and transitions: Ricky Williams, Glenn McDonald, Nomar Garciaparra... (Feel free to post others.) Vikings fullback Robert Smith retired in 2000 and has been promoting his new book about what he thinks is wrong with sports and society that made him decide to quit.

Probably these are affecting me more than usual because I'm facing the imminent end of my own 9-year odyssey through grad school. I am definitely looking forward to getting out from under the omnipresent stress and getting back out into the world, but there are also a lot of things I'm going to miss about my current lifestyle, which I may never have a chance at again. It's hard not to think I wasted a lot of opportunities, but I'm generally not one to dwell on the past and I know that there are a lot more opportunities ahead of me.

CBS hasn't announced a replacement host, though it sounds like they plan to stick to the same format. The too-obvious choice would be to have Jon Stewart follow in Kilborn's footsteps yet again, but the way Stewart jokingly asked Kerry last night to get him a job at a network makes me think that's not in the cards. It'd be great to see him get a full hour, but I wonder if he would have the same impact after midnight that he does now at 11pm (with reruns at 1am, 10am, and 7pm).

I am desperately hoping that Jon Stewart doesn't get an offer from a network, or if he gets one he doesn't take it. He's done such great work on the Daily Show that I'd hate to see him go (back) to a mainstream late-night talk show format.

How imminent is the end?

He was initially offered the job that went to Kilborn, you know. He turned it down cuz he didn't really find it that interesting (Comedy Central is paying him a lot less than he would have earned from CBS). Stewart's got a good thing going and won't mess with it. Plus, does he want to follow a job Kilborn left TWICE in his career?

The rumor is that it might go to some smarmy asshole like Vince Vaughn. I never liked Kilborn, and haven't watched him in years. Smarmy as well, and really just completely uninteresting.

Congrats on your imminent PhD defense!
On one hand, I was relieved to finish and leave grad school. OTOH, after moving up here for my job after grad school, my found my job in industry to be a lot like "grad school with better pay." So I'm not sure what to make of that.

That reminds me, if you end up moving, please let me know so that I can stop by sometime and pick up my BRAZIL DVDs. (Obviously, I haven't been in a hurry to get them back. But if you were in, say, Kalamazoo, it would be hard to ever get them back...)

I was wondering who you were...

I'm not planning to move for at least a year or two. So you know where to find me.

I thought it was a mistake for Kilborn's career to even leave the Daily Show in the first place. When Jon Stewart came in I remembered that there were two Jon Stewart shows: one on MTV that was really funny, and then another on a different network that was just lame (he had some macho persona in that one). I was wondering which one it would be, but now I can't really imagine the Daily Show without Stewart.
