Looks like Pat Jehlen won the State Senate primary, which of course means she wins the seat, since there's never any serious non-Democrat opposition here. I have mixed feelings about this. I'm glad she won—I voted for her, because she seemed by far the most sane and least slimy in the debate that
prog filmed. But despite the impressive margin of victory (7117 vs. 4984), it was a four-way plurality election, and she got less than 40% of the total vote. And it's plausible that she would have lost in an instant-runoff election—the other three candidates seemed to have a similar constituency (working-class moderate Democrats from Medford and Woburn), whereas Jehlen united the West Somerville progressive vote. If 2/3 of the Callahan and Casey voters preferred Mackey to Jehlen, he'd have won (9370 vs. 9310). Ironically, the election is filling the seat vacated by the late Charles Shannon, who was on the Election Laws committee, which would be the first barrier for instant runoff legislation.
Hm, I just noticed that Jehlen was one of the petitioners on an instant runoff voting petition that was referred to the Election Laws committee in January. I guess I should drop her a line to ask if she still supports it and whether it has a future.
Edit: Jehlen actually mentions IRV on her issues page. I'm pretty sure it wasn't there the last time I looked, or else I just missed it. Anyway, another good sign.
