Last week I mentioned I had invented a couple games. I submitted one of them, Intersect, to the Fifth Ice Game Design Competition. There are only five entries this time, so I'm guaranteed to do better than last time, when I submitted Quintazone to the Third Ice Game Design Competition and came in 6th place (out of 11). Unfortunately I think Quintazone is a much better game than Intersect. I came up with the idea for Intersect on the spur of the moment when Jonathan Leistiko (the new contest coordinator, taking over from
zarf) posted a final reminder about the deadline for reserving a spot in the contest; the idea seemed reasonable enough that I could make it into a workable game in time for the the submission deadline a week later. But I only got to playtest it three times, and it definitely needs more work. It's not broken, it's just a lot more random than I wanted it to be. Technically it's not random, since you could predict your opponent's choices, but I regard simultaneous selection as an essentially random mechanism. I intentionally used this as a source of randomness, because I'm not that fond of deterministic (no-luck) games, but there's not really enough other things going on around it to add enough strategy. But feel free to give it a try, and let me know what you think. (And vote in the competition, if you play any of the other four games too.)
