Here's me being interviewed by
colorwheel:
1) Besides a PhD, what would you like to have in your life within the next five years that you don't have now?
Concretely, I would like to own a house, or at least a nice condo. I've wanted to have a house since I was a little kid, when we moved from apartment to apartment. But buying a house while in school seemed like a really bad idea. Five years seems like a reasonable deadline, although I think it'll be more like three.
Abstractly, I would like to have more organization in my life. Things have been in constant disarray over the past few years, because I never have the time and energy to put aside work (and play) and really get on top of it all. Instead it's been a form of the broken windows theory: there's already lots of clutter, so how can a little more hurt? (Yes, I know the broken windows theory is controversial; it's just a handy metaphor.) So it keeps piling up-- not just physical clutter and disorganized shelves, but things like undealt-with bills, files of old email, and various half-started projects. Once I stop having the excuses of needing to finish the dissertation and find a job, I'm hoping I can really start to tackle it once and for all.
2) What makes you feel mushy?
I don't know how to answer this question, partly because I don't know what exactly you mean by "feeling mushy", and partly because I suspect I've never "felt mushy" in the way you mean. Sentimentality tends to bug me, and when something (a movie, a song) evokes emotions in me, it's generally just happiness or sadness rather than mushiness. Maybe this deserves a follow-up question...
3) Do you have siblings?
I have three half-siblings: Danielle, 22, and Mark, 19 (that picture's about 5 or 6 years old), on my dad's side, and Jennifer (aka
lolathehated), 16, on my mom's side. I was an only child until I was 11, though, and still sort of think that way.
4) How would you describe yourself politically? (Use any kinds of words you like.)
Wishy-washy. Well, maybe not; most of my positions have been fairly solid lately but until about 5 years ago I was mostly apolitical, and I tended to flip around based on whatever I last read. I'm currently a registered Green, although at heart I think I'm more of a (small-L) libertarian. I'm pro-first-and-second-amendments, pro-abortion, anti-drug-war, pro-free-trade, anti-unilateralism. Economically I think taxes are a necessary evil, but pragmatically speaking I think they'll have to go higher (along with the minimum wage) before they can go lower. The environment needs to be protected; ideally it should be up to economic forces rather than government intervention, but sometimes the Invisible Hand moves a little too slowly and we can't afford to wait. The single issue I'm most concerned with, though, is fixing the broken electoral system where people vote based on fear instead of voting their preference. Instant Runoff Voting is one obvious first step, but it still seems a long ways away. (One of my userpics comes from that site, by the way.)
5) How do you feel about being barefoot?
Since my bedroom and office are carpeted, I'm pretty much always barefoot at home, though I have to wear slippers to go downstairs on the hardwood floors. Outdoors in the summer, I occasionally go barefoot, if the pavement's not too hot and there's no broken glass. I've still never found a sandal I liked, though, so I end up wearing docksiders at the beach to walk on the hot sand. I tried to drive barefoot once, when the tops of my feet were sunburned and shoes hurt too much, but it just wasn't working (and is probably illegal).

Interview me
1. I'm pushing the big four oh and want to see if my answers generate any type of disagreement/debate/discussion with the young, hip live journalin' crowd.
2. I need something to start off my journal.
3. I love being introduced to new things and sharing that type of experience with others. However I hate having people come up to me out of the blue and evangelisizing on what ever revs their engine. I've found that "pointless" conversations are a great way to get things going.
4. The wife recently got thte second season of Buffy on DVD and I cannot sit through another three episodes tonight.
