Okay, I only just got around to watching Friday's "Late Show" on TiVo, but now I know the news: David Letterman is going to be a father. Here's how he announced it:
I have an announcement to make and I'll be honest with you, I'm a little bit nervous. I have some trepidations about this. I feel a little silly because it's one of those things where I thought never in my life this would happen. And here I am, 56, and by all rights it shouldn't be happening. But, there's nothing we can do about it now. And I'm terribly excited about this. I'm scared silly about this. I'm going to be a father.
Not exactly the most eloquent way of putting it, but it's pretty much what I would have expected from ol' Dave. He also said he'd been waking up every day for the last six months screaming "WHAT HAVE I DONE?" I'm amazed he managed to keep it out of the gossip columns for six months! He also mentioned his girlfriend's name (Regina), I believe for the first time on the show, and that they were still negotiating about marriage ("we kind of got the cart before the horse here"). But I'm sure he'll be a great father: "I just don't want one of those kids who's always taking a dump in its pants."
