Debian Linux question

Is it my imagination, or did /bin/ls used to sort by case? Now it puts, for example, "README" down among the "r"s instead of before all lowercase filenames. When did this change? Is this a concession to Windows case-insensitivity or something?

Google knows. (http://www.google.com/search?q=case-sensitive+ls+linux+sorting&btnG=Search&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8) Looks like it's actually a concession to internationalization; it turns out ASCII sorting doesn't make sense for everyone. You can force it back, though.

Things like that are why I'm glad I stick to BSD whenever possible. :-)
