Tonight's episode of the sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" had a flashback to a college dorm room in 1996, and the music playing in the background was "I Am A Scientist" by the band Guided By Voices:
Not only is it just a great song that was great to hear on national TV, but it was a perfect song for the scene. An obscure band, and a song from when they were even more obscure, yet also probably their best song, and well-loved by those who knew them in 1996, i.e. hip college kids. (And yes, the song was from 1994, which makes it even more cool because it's not an obvious song to pick for 1996.) (Sadly, kind of a lame video. I don't think I'd ever seen it before looking it up just now on YouTube.)
Oh, it was also one of the best episodes ("How I Met Everyone Else"). Great show.
