A long while ago I decided on "programming languages", "board games", and "underground music" as the hobbies for my profile on some online dating service. Those somewhat broad categories pretty much cover most of what I do for fun, so I used them for the interests list on my LiveJournal profile. There are other things I'm interested in that aren't exactly hobbies, though, so in order to give a more rounded impression of what discussion topics might be found in my journal, I figured I ought to flesh out that list. Anyway, here's a little tour of the new additions:I'm sure I'll think of more, but inertia will probably prevent me from adding anything for a while. Meanwhile, comments and questions are welcome...
OK, I thought of another interest I forgot: ending the Drug War. This is different from legalizing drugs, although I'm pretty sure that would be a good idea too. But even Martha Stewart (who will be released from prison in two weeks) is against the Drug War:
I beseech you all to think about these women -- to encourage the American people to ask for reforms, both in sentencing guidelines, in length of incarceration for nonviolent first-time offenders, and for those involved in drug-taking. They would be much better served in a true rehabilitation center than in prison where there is no real help, no real programs to rehabilitate, no programs to educate, no way to be prepared for life "out there" where each person will ultimately find herself, many with no skills and no preparation for living.
(Thanks to The Wunderland Weekly News for the link.) I've never taken drugs, nor have I ever had any desire to take drugs. I've been around people (including family members) who have taken drugs, and I've seen it do some ugly things to people. But I can say the same for alcohol, and we figured out long ago that Prohibition didn't work. The ridiculous excesses of the Drug War far outweigh the damage to society that drugs could ever do, especially when compared to the minimal effect it's had on actually curbing the drug trade or drug use.

I should probably come up with more non-political interests to add to my list; it's looking sort of dreary. And it's not like I'm actually an activist about any of it.
