I've been really enjoying "The Alternative" on VH1 Classic the past few weeks. VH1 Classic is a digital-only cable channel (277 on my local Comcast lineup) that plays nothing but old videos, with very few commercials (like one per hour, not counting VH1 promos). Every Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, at 11am and 11pm, they show an hour of alt-rock videos (two hours on Sunday). The Tivo program listing says "Videos from unconventional bands of the '60s, '70s, and '80s", but it's really more like 1977-1994, with a pretty heavy emphasis on late '80s/early '90s. So far, I've watched about nine hours total and they haven't repeated a video yet; I've seen quite a few that I never knew existed, like Swervedriver "Duel", Black Flag "TV Party", Love and Rockets "If There's A Heaven Above", Joy Division "Love Will Tear Us Apart", Visage "Fade to Grey", Blur "She's So High", and the biggest pleasant surprise, My Bloody Valentine "Soon"! I thought "Only Shallow" was their only video, but apparently "Soon" predated it—it was listed as being from the Glider EP rather than Loveless. I don't think I had ever seen the video for King Missile "Detachable Penis" either, but I wasn't surprised it existed. It's also nice to see old favorites like Helmet "Unsung", Happy Mondays "Step On", The Pixies "Alec Eiffel", and of course Madness "One Step Beyond". As you can see, they give plenty of time to shoegazer, Madchester, and grunge; the one thing that seems to be missing is industrial, although they did play Ministry "Stigmata". But I remember "120 Minutes" used to play stuff like Fortran V, Frontline Assembly, Meat Beat Manifesto, Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, etc. and it'd be cool to see those again. Or even, you know, Nine Inch Nails.
Speaking of "120 Minutes", apparently it was still on the air as recently as 2003. Who knew? There's now something on MTV2 called "Subterranean", which is only one hour instead ot two, but seems to have the same general mandate as "120 Minutes" (though I haven't watched it yet). It's on Sundays at midnight, with a rerun at 2am Tuesday mornings.
Does anyone remember "Post-Modern MTV"? I remember it predating "120 Minutes", or else it was just a different time slot. The AltMusicTV.com site doesn't mention it, and there's only a few scattered references to it on the net.
