I saw a ton of new movies last year, largely in theaters. Traditionally, I've been doing writeups of Best Picture nominees, where I'll often list some of my favorites that didn't get nominated. This time, I kept a little better track of what I watched, so I decided to rank them all from top to bottom!
Overall, I'd say it was a better-than-average year for movies, but maybe not an all-timer. I have positive feelings about most of the movies on my list; I only outright hated the bottom few. There were a number of movies considered big flops that I actually quite liked; there were also several critical darlings that I thought were tremendously overrated (some of which I still liked, just not as much). I suppose that's normal, but I felt more out-of-step than usual—my feeling is most people felt it was a down year for movies. I suppose history will judge.
Special shout-out to two films I saw in 2022 that were technically released earlier, though they never had a wide release: Memoria, which would definitely have been in my top 10, and First and Last Men, which would probably be in my top 20 or so.
(Movies marked with * were ones I didn't see in a theater.)
Of course there's still a bunch of movies on my to-watch list; we'll see how many I can get to before the Oscars:
The Eternal Daughter
EO
All the Beauty and the Bloodshed
Women Talking
Hit the Road
The Wonder
Is That Black Enough For You?
Something in the Dirt
The Son
Good Night Oppy
Descendant
Living
Broker
Close
Emancipation
Turn Every Page
Corsage
Man Called Otto
Avatar 2
Update: See how far I got.
