I did some fiddling around, and after installing the libflashsupport package, I can now run audio Flash applets without blocking/hanging other apps! Whew!
I still can't get both Java and Amarok to play audio at the same time, but at least they fail gracefully. Maybe some other day I'll figure that one out.
