After three episodes, I give a tentative thumbs-up to "New Amsterdam", on Fox on Monday nights at 9pm. It's an episodic police detective show, which generally doesn't thrill me. But the premise is intriguing, and so far they've been pulling it off.

The main character, John Amsterdam (not his real name), was magically granted immortality in the 1600s by a Lenape woman whose life he saved. Except, not quite—she said he will not age or die until he meets his one true love. So, he's a 400-year-old guy who looks like he's 35. The episodes are structured like "Lost", with a present-day story interleaved with a flashback from his (long and eventful) life. It could be corny, but so far it's been done pretty well; we're slowly learning interesting tidbits about his history, and his 400 years of experience is almost like a superpower to help him be a good detective (which is only the most recent in a long line of careers). There's a bit of Groundhog Day in that, and also in the goal of finding the woman who will break the spell.

Watch the first three episodes on the Fox website (or Bittorrent), or at least the pilot, directed by Lasse Hallström (although some important things don't get revealed until the second episode).

I'm enjoying it so far! I missed the premiere, but episodes 2 and 3 have caught my interest. I particularly liked the bit where he spilled his secret to a little kid, who asked, "What if your head gets cut off?". Exactly what I was thinking. :-)

The multiple plot threads seem interesting. You've got the murder-of-the-week, the ongoing love story, and the flashback to prior experiences. And I particularly like how he's able to figure things out quickly, or come up with surprising insights, because he's almost literally seen it all before. No real superpower, but close.

I'm surprised he's so constantly upbeat, though. After 400 years, I'd imagine myself getting REALLY cynical!

i'm enjoying it.. though they are certainly things that are iffy..

there's been a consistent joke between diana and me regarding omar and using his children as sidekicks.

Ooohhh, thank you for posting the links. I caught the first and third episodes, but missed the second. I hadn't realized you could download entire episodes on the Web. Thanks! I just watched ep #2, so now I'm all caught up! =)

My wife didn't think much of the pilot, but liked the second episode enough to get me to watch it. So I've seen the second and third episodes, and they were good enough to keep watching, especially since none of the shows I'm hooked on (House, Pushing Daisies) are airing.

Yup, I saw the first two and liked it enough to keep at it. The second episode was much better than the pilot, I thought.

We watched the first two so far. The pilot was strong, considering how forced some pilots feel.

It's like Angel meets Dresden Files meets How I Met Your Mother. If only the woman on the subway had a yellow umbrella.

It is also on hulu.com. Quite interesting with Highlander meets NYPD (or New Amsterdam). I was pretty sure John was going to pull out a swanky sword.
